Speke Resort Munyonyo

Speke Resort Munyonyo — Lake Victoria view

Perched magnificently on the shimmering shores of Lake Victoria, Speke Resort Munyonyo stands as Uganda's most iconic luxury destination — a place where Africa's grandeur meets world-class sophistication. Named in honour of the intrepid British explorer John Hanning Speke, who famously discovered the source of the Nile just kilometres away, this legendary resort carries a legacy as rich and storied as the continent it celebrates.

Sprawling across 40 beautifully manicured lakefront hectares, the resort is a self-contained paradise that has hosted heads of state, international summits, and the most discerning travellers from every corner of the globe. As the official residence for the 2027 IFATCA World Conference, Speke Resort Munyonyo offers delegates not just accommodation, but an immersive experience that perfectly embodies Uganda's spirit of warm hospitality and breathtaking natural beauty.

Guests are welcomed into 308 exquisitely appointed rooms and suites, each designed to blend contemporary elegance with authentic Ugandan character. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping panoramas of Lake Victoria — the world's largest tropical lake — transforming every sunrise into a private spectacle of gold and amber light dancing across still waters. Plush furnishings, artisan crafts, and locally inspired décor create spaces that feel both luxurious and deeply rooted in African culture.

Dining at Speke Resort is a journey in itself. Multiple restaurants and bars serve everything from elevated Ugandan cuisine — rolex wraps, matoke, tilapia fresh from the lake — to international gastronomy crafted by award-winning chefs. Whether you choose al fresco dining beside the lake or an intimate candlelit dinner on the terrace restaurant, every meal is an occasion to savour. The resort's cocktail lounges and pool bar offer the perfect setting for after-conference sundowners, where conversations flow as freely as the renowned Ugandan coffee.

Recreational facilities are nothing short of extraordinary. A championship golf course, Olympic-sized swimming pools, watersports on the lake, a full-service spa, tennis courts, fitness centre, and one of East Africa's finest conference centres make Speke Resort Munyonyo the complete destination. Here, IFATCA 2027 delegates will find that the conference and the adventure are equally magnificent — a fitting base from which to explore the Pearl of Africa in all its glory.

Why Uganda is the Safari of a Lifetime

Winston Churchill called it the Pearl of Africa — and once you arrive, you'll understand why. Uganda offers an extraordinary convergence of wildlife, culture, landscapes, and warmth that few destinations on earth can match.

🦍
Half the World's Mountain Gorillas
Uganda is home to more than 500 of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — over half the global population. Trekking to spend one unforgettable hour with a gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a once-in-a-lifetime experience no other destination can replicate.
🌍
Extraordinary Biodiversity
Packing 1,061 bird species, 345 mammal species, and 4,900 plant species into a country the size of the United Kingdom, Uganda offers the highest density of wildlife in Africa. Every square kilometre vibrates with life, colour, and sound.
🌅
Dramatic Landscapes
From the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains — the legendary Mountains of the Moon — to the thundering Murchison Falls, the crater lakes of western Uganda and the vast papyrus swamps of the Nile, the landscapes are as diverse as they are breathtaking.
👥
Warmest People on Earth
Ugandans are renowned across Africa for their extraordinary warmth, hospitality, and joy. More than 56 distinct ethnic groups weave a rich cultural tapestry expressed through music, dance, crafts, and cuisine. A smile is Uganda's national language.
🏆
Safe & Well-Managed Tourism
Uganda's national park system is among the best managed in Africa. Strict visitor protocols, well-trained rangers, and a strong conservation ethos ensure your adventure is safe, ethical, and sustainable. Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the gold standard.
Coffee, Culture & Cuisine
Birthplace of some of the world's finest Arabica coffee, Uganda offers a culinary and cultural richness that delights every sense. From street food markets to upscale restaurants, from traditional drumming ceremonies to royal palace tours, Uganda feeds the soul.

Uganda's National Parks

Each of Uganda's national parks is a world unto itself — distinct ecosystems hosting remarkable wildlife and offering experiences that range from thrilling to transcendent.

01
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Western Uganda · 1,978 km²

Uganda's most popular and most biodiverse national park, Queen Elizabeth straddles the equator and encompasses an astonishing range of habitats — from the open savannah of Kasenyi to the dense Maramagambo Forest and the spectacular Kazinga Channel. Famous for the world's only tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, it is also home to massive elephant herds, Cape buffalo, hippos, leopards, and over 600 bird species. The 32-kilometre Kazinga Channel boat cruise is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in Africa, offering close encounters with hundreds of hippos and Nile crocodiles.

02
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
South-West Uganda · 331 km²

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's oldest and most biologically diverse forests, Bwindi is the sacred home of Uganda's mountain gorillas. This ancient forest, over 25,000 years old, shelters more than half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population across four habituated family groups. Trekking through the dense, mist-covered vegetation to sit within ten metres of these magnificent, gentle giants is universally described as life-changing. Beyond gorillas, Bwindi hosts 350 bird species, chimpanzees, and 120 mammal species.

03
Murchison Falls National Park
North-West Uganda · 3,840 km²

Uganda's largest and oldest national park, Murchison Falls is defined by the spectacular sight of the Nile River forcing itself through a seven-metre gorge to create one of the most powerful waterfalls on earth. The park's vast, open savannahs host large populations of elephants, giraffes, Cape buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and lions. The Nile Delta area in the north is one of Uganda's premier birding destinations, famous for the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork. A boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls is the highlight of any visit.

04
Lake Mburo National Park
Western Uganda · 370 km²

The closest national park to Kampala, Lake Mburo is a hidden gem beloved by serious birders and those seeking an intimate, uncrowded safari experience. The park is most famous for being Uganda's only park where you can track zebra, impala, and eland on foot — a thrilling alternative to vehicle-based game drives. The five lakes within the park attract enormous concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and waterbirds. Night game drives reveal leopards, servals, and civets. Horseback safaris offer a uniquely exhilarating way to explore the acacia-dotted savannah.

Uganda's Big Seven

While Africa speaks of the Big Five, Uganda proudly claims two extraordinary additions — the mountain gorilla and the chimpanzee — creating an unrivalled Big Seven that makes Uganda the continent's ultimate wildlife destination.

🦍
Mountain Gorilla
The crown jewel of Ugandan wildlife. With fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining globally, spending an hour with a gorilla family in Bwindi is a profound privilege that will stay with you forever.
🐒
Chimpanzee
Our closest living relatives, sharing 98.7% of our DNA. Kibale Forest hosts East Africa's largest chimpanzee population — tracking them through the canopy is endlessly exhilarating.
🐘
African Elephant
Uganda's forests and savannahs shelter thousands of elephants. Watch enormous herds gather at waterholes in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls at dusk — an unforgettable spectacle.
🦁
African Lion
Queen Elizabeth's Ishasha sector hosts the world's only tree-climbing lions — a remarkable and mysterious behaviour found almost nowhere else on earth.
🐆
Leopard
Uganda's elusive spotted cats are most reliably found in Lake Mburo and Murchison Falls. Night game drives significantly improve your chances of a magical encounter.
🦏
White Rhinoceros
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary north of Kampala is home to Uganda's growing southern white rhino population — a remarkable conservation success story and a moving on-foot encounter.
🐃
Cape Buffalo
Massive herds of Cape buffalo roam Uganda's parks. Seen in groups of hundreds along the Kazinga Channel and Murchison Falls, they are one of Africa's most impressive and formidable sights.

Food, Culture & People

Uganda is a feast for all the senses — a mosaic of 56 tribes, royal kingdoms, vibrant markets, extraordinary cuisine, and some of the most genuine human warmth anywhere on earth.

🍌
Ugandan Cuisine
Rolex — a chapati rolled with eggs and vegetables — is the beloved street food. Matoke, groundnut stew, posho, and fresh tilapia from Lake Victoria are staples. Don't leave without trying jackfruit, passion fruit, and the extraordinary Uganda vanilla.
🍓
Tropical Fruits
Uganda's equatorial climate produces an extraordinary abundance year-round. Fresh pineapple — sweeter than anything found elsewhere — mangoes, papaya, passion fruit, jackfruit, avocado, and the African star apple are sold fresh at every roadside market.
Coffee Culture
Uganda produces some of the world's finest Arabica and Robusta beans. The traditional Buganda coffee ceremony is a ritual of hospitality. Sipi Falls is the heart of Uganda's single-origin coffee country, where farm-to-cup tours offer an unforgettable sensory experience.
🥁
Culture & Kingdoms
Uganda is home to ancient kingdoms — Buganda, Bunyoro, Tooro, Ankole, and Busoga — each with its own royal traditions, language, music, and ceremonial dress. The Kasubi Tombs (UNESCO) and the Kabaka's Palace are extraordinary historical monuments.
🌡️
Perfect Weather
Temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C year-round. Two dry seasons — December to February and June to September — are prime safari seasons. Even during the rains, showers are short and intense, clearing quickly to brilliant tropical sunshine.
🤝
The Ugandan People
Ugandans are universally celebrated for their warmth, generosity, and infectious joy. You'll be greeted with genuine smiles everywhere — from the streets of Kampala to remote village paths in the southwest. Hospitality here is not a service but a deeply held cultural value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to enter Uganda?
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda and is a popular option for delegates planning regional travel. Single-entry Uganda visas cost $50. Both are available online at the Uganda e-Visa portal (evisa.go.ug) before departure. Citizens of over 40 African countries and some Commonwealth nations may enter visa-free — check the latest requirements for your nationality before travelling.
What vaccinations do I need for Uganda?
Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory and you must carry your Yellow Fever certificate to enter Uganda. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Meningitis. Anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended for all areas outside Kampala. Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure. COVID-19 requirements vary — check current entry regulations before travel.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of fitness as treks can last from 30 minutes to 8 hours through steep, dense, sometimes muddy forest terrain. You do not need to be an athlete — porters are available to carry bags and even assist trekkers over difficult sections. The minimum age is 15 years. Those with serious mobility issues should consult with us about specific family groups with easier access routes. Wearing long sleeves, long trousers, and sturdy waterproof boots with ankle support is essential.
What currency does Uganda use, and can I use cards?
Uganda's currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). USD, EUR, and GBP can be exchanged at banks, forex bureaux, and your hotel. Crisp, undamaged USD notes printed after 2009 attract the best exchange rates. Major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at Speke Resort, larger hotels, and supermarkets in Kampala, but cash is essential in national parks and rural areas. ATMs are available in Kampala and all major towns along safari routes.
Is Uganda safe for tourists?
Uganda is one of East Africa's most stable and safe destinations for tourists. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The national parks are staffed by trained, armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Kampala, like any major city, requires normal urban awareness — avoiding poorly lit areas at night and keeping valuables secure. Ntungo Wildlife Safaris' guides and drivers are experienced professionals with an impeccable safety record. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended for all participants.
What should I pack for a Uganda safari?
For game drives: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a light fleece or jacket for early mornings and evenings, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen. For gorilla trekking: long waterproof trousers, long-sleeved shirt, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, garden gloves, and insect repellent. Binoculars are essential for wildlife and birding. A good camera with a zoom lens is highly recommended. A rain jacket is useful year-round. Sunglasses, a head torch, and a power bank complete the safari essentials.

What is the internet and mobile connectivity like in Uganda?
Mobile connectivity is excellent throughout Uganda's urban areas and increasingly reliable in national parks. MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda are the main networks with widespread 4G coverage. A local SIM card — purchased at Entebbe Airport or in Kampala — is the most affordable and reliable option. Speke Resort Munyonyo offers high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the property. Connectivity in remote forest and deep park areas is limited but improving steadily, with most lodge reception areas having reliable coverage.
Can I travel with my spouse and children? What activities can they enjoy while I'm at the conference?

Absolutely! We warmly welcome you to bring your spouse and children to Kampala. To ensure your family has a memorable experience while you attend the conference, we have curated a rich selection of activities and excursions that showcase the very best of Uganda.
