Not every traveller has two weeks. Not every schedule accommodates a ten-day safari. But every traveller — regardless of how limited their time — deserves to experience the wildlife encounters that define Uganda as one of the great safari destinations on earth.

The 3-day Uganda flying safari is Ntungo Wildlife Safaris' answer to the question we are asked more than any other: "I only have three or four days in Uganda — what can I realistically do?"

The answer, when you travel by light aircraft between Uganda's finest destinations, is more than most people imagine possible in the time available.

In three days — flying directly between destinations rather than spending precious hours on overland roads — you will descend into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and spend a life-changing hour with a family of wild mountain gorillas. You will cruise the legendary Kazinga Channel from a boat at water level, surrounded by hundreds of hippos, enormous crocodiles, and an extraordinary concentration of waterbirds. You will game drive the open savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park — home to 96 mammal species and over 600 bird species — in the most productive hours of the African day. And you will do all of this without spending a single unnecessary hour in a vehicle when you could instead be in the field, in the forest, or on the water.

Day 1: Entebbe to Bwindi — Into the World of the Gorillas

Your 3-day Uganda flying safari begins early — the light aircraft departure from Entebbe typically leaves between 07:00 and 08:00, which means an early breakfast at your Entebbe accommodation and a pre-dawn transfer to the domestic aviation facility.

For travellers arriving on overnight international flights, same-day connection to the light aircraft is possible if the international arrival is sufficiently early. Your Ntungo guide will advise on the feasibility of same-day departure based on your specific flight arrival time, and will arrange overnight accommodation at Entebbe if a rested departure the following morning is more appropriate.

The 75-minute flight from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip is the first great experience of the safari — a low-altitude journey across the western half of Uganda that reveals the country's extraordinary geographical drama from above. The aircraft crosses the central plateau, the terrain rising and falling in waves of green hillside and valley, before the landscape transforms as the Albertine Rift comes into view — the great geological trench of Africa's western branch, flanked by escarpments and ancient volcanic landforms that stretch north and south beyond sight. As the aircraft descends toward the Bwindi area, the Virunga volcanic peaks — including Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo on the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border — rise ahead in a landscape of extraordinary, almost mythological grandeur.

On landing at the small grass airstrip, your guide collects you for the short drive to your lodge — typically 20 to 45 minutes depending on which airstrip and which lodge sector of Bwindi. Check in, enjoy a welcome lunch, and spend the afternoon in a combination of rest and preparation.

The essential activity of the afternoon is the Uganda Wildlife Authority pre-trek briefing — a detailed introduction to gorilla trekking protocols, rules of engagement, health requirements (respiratory illness can be transmitted to gorillas, whose immune systems are not adapted to human pathogens), photography guidelines, and physical preparation. Your UWA ranger will also share information about the specific gorilla family you have been assigned and their current location within the forest.

The remainder of the afternoon is yours — the lodge grounds at Bwindi are beautiful and often productive for birdwatching, with several Albertine Rift endemic species regularly observed around the lodge perimeter. Dinner is served as the forest descends into its evening sounds, and an early night is strongly recommended.

Tomorrow morning, you meet the gorillas.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Flight to Queen Elizabeth National Park

This is the day the entire itinerary is built around — and it begins long before sunrise.

A light breakfast is served before dawn, and by the time the forest is fully light, your group is assembled at the park briefing point for the final confirmation of group assignments and any last-minute guidance from the UWA rangers. The rangers leading your group will have been in radio contact with the trackers who have been following the gorilla family's movements since early morning — so even before you enter the forest, they have a general sense of where today's trek will lead.

The trek begins.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is exactly what its name promises — a dense, ancient, tangled forest of extraordinary biological complexity, covering the slopes of an extinct volcano at altitudes between 1,160 and 2,607 metres. The trails wind through bamboo zones, cross streams on wooden bridges, push through dense undergrowth of wild ginger and forest floor herbs, and climb slopes that test the legs and lungs in roughly equal measure. Porter hire is available and strongly recommended for travellers who have any concerns about the physical demands of the terrain — the porters are local community members for whom the income is significant, and their assistance is genuinely valuable on steep sections.

The duration of the trek varies from one to six hours depending on gorilla family location — most treks fall between two and four hours of hiking. And then, at a signal from the lead ranger, the group stops.

The gorillas are ahead.

What follows is one hour that travellers consistently describe as the most extraordinary wildlife experience of their lives — and often, simply, the most extraordinary experience of their lives, wildlife or otherwise. A silverback weighing up to 220 kilograms. Females nursing infants with extraordinary tenderness. Juveniles playing in the branches above your head. Adolescents feeding on leaves and bark just metres from where you stand. The sounds of the family — soft contact calls, the crack of broken branches, occasional alarm barks — creating a sensory experience of complete immersion in the life of another species.

The maximum permitted distance between gorillas and humans is 7 metres, though the gorillas themselves frequently approach closer — particularly curious juveniles who have not yet learned the caution of their elders. These moments of voluntary approach — a juvenile sitting to observe you at two metres, a female glancing at you as she passes — are among the most deeply moving encounters in wildlife travel.

After the trek, return to the lodge for a hot lunch and a brief rest before the afternoon transfer back to the airstrip.

The 45-minute flight north to Mweya Airstrip in Queen Elizabeth National Park departs in the early afternoon — and the transition from the enclosed, ancient world of Bwindi's forest to the vast, open savannah of Queen Elizabeth is one of the most dramatic environmental contrasts in Uganda. The aircraft descends over the Kazinga Channel — visible from above as a silver ribbon connecting two great Rift Valley lakes — and lands on the grass strip at Mweya as the afternoon light begins its turn toward gold.

An evening game drive on the Mweya Peninsula and Kasenyi Plains introduces Queen Elizabeth's open-country wildlife: Uganda kob in enormous herds across the short-grass savannah, warthogs trotting with their tails held vertically, African buffalo in their great dusty aggregations, elephants moving between the woodland and the channel's edge, and the possibility of lions in the acacia and euphorbia woodland of the peninsula's western tip. The 600+ bird species of Queen Elizabeth make even a brief evening drive an outstanding birding experience — grey crowned cranes, lilac-breasted rollers, pied kingfishers, and African fish eagles are all commonly observed in the late afternoon light.
