This 11 day safari takes you to hike the Rwenzori mountains to its peak- Margherita gives you an intimate experience of the hike. The Rwenzori mountain is a UNESCO world heritage site located in the south western part of Uganda at the border with DR Congo. They are Africa’s highest mountain ranges with fourth highest peak in Africa which is snowcapped throughout the year. This hike is strenuous and needs extra preparation in terms of fitness and apparel. Let’s get this experience started!

11 Day Rwenzori Mountains Hike

Arrival to Uganda is through Entebbe international Airport. On arrival, you will meet your Ntungo safaris driver/guide and then you will transfer to the hotel for lunch or dinner depending on the time of your arrival.

After your breakfast, you will then drive out southwards to Kasese district which is home to the Rwenzori mountains and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. Today we shall have a lunch stop in Mbarara and then continue further south to Kasese.

Overnight: Hotel Margherita or Equator snow lodge

After your breakfast, drive to Nyakalengija and start of the hike to Nyabitaba. The hike time is between 5 to 6 hours depending on your hiking speed. You will hike from an altitude of 1646m and as you do, you will go through rocky areas, cross the Mobuku river, experience various wildlife in the mountains like the Blue monkeys, birds like the Lagden’s bush shrike, Blue-headed and Golden-winged sunbird, white-starred robin, not forgetting the Rwenzori Turaco named after the mountains. On arrival to Nyabitaba Hut, we shall have dinner and overnight here.

Have a sumptuous breakfast and head out for today’s hike. The journey time is about 9 hours and you will be transiting through muddy areas while you have the Mobuku river still in sight. Cross the bamboo forest and connect to the Nyamuleju hut. Keep going to an altitude of 3,414m and this is the John Matte Hut. You have great views of the Margherita peak, Elena Peak, and Stanley peak. Dinner and overnight at John Matte Hut.

This is a 6km path taking you to 3962m therefore it is about 5 to 6 hours’ duration. From the John Matte Hut, you will slope to the Bigo Bog and have continual views of the peaks. Proceed with the hike passing near Lake Bujuku where the beautiful Alpine savannah vegetation starts from. Later arrive at Bujuku Hut. The views today are of the three; Mount Stanley, Mount Speke and Mount Baker. You will have dinner and spend the night here.

Early morning after breakfast, go through the groundsel vegetation on a 4km hike. You will then climb to 4372m at Scot Elliot Pass; this is between Mount Stanley and Baker. Reach Elena Hut at 4540m where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Set off from Elena for a 3hour hike through the last region of ice and rock on Mount Stanley which takes you to Margherita Peak. After the experience at the top, descend via the muddy grounds of Lower and Upper Lake Kitandara, this is where the Hut is located. Here is where we have our dinner and overnight.

Early after breakfast, start a 6 hours hike through the Fresh field Pass at 4282m as you now start descending through the boggy and rocky regions. There’s are a number of glaciers of Mount Baker, Savoy and Stanley. Continue down to Kabamba, Akendahi and Bujongolo rock shelters. After proceed through the Kabamba valley and then arrive at Guy Yeoman Hut which is at 3216m. Breathtaking landscapes of rivers, vegetation are offered right here.

Early morning yo will depart from Guy Yeoman hut to Nyakalengija. Enjoy great views of flowers and plants., bamboo forests and Kinchuchuand Mubuku rivers. You will also not miss the Kabamba falls. In case you are interested, there are chances to see the Mahoma lake then return to the Hut and descend further to the park headquarters for exit and departure to the lodge.

Overnight: Hotel Margherita or Equator snow lodge

Today we shall transfer to Entebbe after our breakfast.

Today we shall have time in the hotel before check in for the return flight back home. We have optional activities that can be arranged basing on your liking. These could be biking within Entebbe, a trip to Ngamba island, Botanical Gardens or even the Zoo for some real exciting and yet educative activities.
